The initiative on the Accessibility of the Web or Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) was launched in February 1997 by the World Wide Web Consortium and gathers more than 500 members: companies, organizations resulting from industry, organizations for handicapped people, research organization and governmental.

The main mission of the WAI is to propose technical solutions to return the World Wide Web accessible to handicapped and in a more general way to any person without requiring particular prérequis.

The actions of WAI are in five fields:

  1. technologies of the Web;
  2. the development of recommendations;
  3. the development of tools;
  4. information and formation;
  5. the research and the development.
