WebDAV ( Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning ) is a protocol (more precisely, an extension of the protocol HTTP) defined by the homonymous work group IETF. Described in RFC 2518, WebDAV makes it possible to simplify the file management with distant waiters. It makes it possible to recover, deposit, synchronize and to easily publish files (and files) quickly and. The main aim of WebDAV is to make possible the writing through the Web and not only the reading of data. WebDAV makes it possible several users simultaneously to publish the contents of a file Web. It will be able to manage the rights of access with the files (or files), by temporarily locking the published files and files. Under Windows XP, the WebDAV files are in the " Favorites réseau".

Extensions

Here a short description of the extensions provided by DAV:

  • Protection against crushing : mechanism of locking and unlocking to avoid the problems of synchronization of updates. Protocol DAV supports the exclusive and shared accesses.

  • Properties : Metadatum S (title, subject, creator, etc).
  • Management of the attributes of files : to copy, re-elect, move and remove files.
  • Access control : limitation of access to various resources. Generally, DAV considers that a Access control is already in place, and does not provide a robust mechanism of Authentification.
  • Management of the versions : control versions of the documents. The control of the versions is not implemented yet.
