Wauthier of Malonne

Wauthier de Malonne (in Polish Walter Z Malonne ) is a bishop of Wrocław deceased in 1169.
Wauthier arrives in Poland coming from Malonne, close to Namur. He is accompanied by his older brother Alexandre who becomes bishop of Płock in 1129. It is there that Wauthier learns Polish. He becomes appointed of Płock.
In 1149, Wauthier is named bishop of Wrocław. It reforms the administrative structures of sound Diocèse. It obliges the priests to comply with the rule of the Célibat. It founds the Chapitre cathédral of Wrocław. In 1150, it starts the construction of the Romance Cathédrale of Wrocław.
Wauthier obtains Pape Adrien IV the Promulgation of a bubble, the April 23rd 1155, by which the diocese of Wrocław is placed under the protection of the the Holy See. He probably encouraged Walloon tisserands to settle in Wrocław.
