Watts
Watts is a district of Los Angeles, it is located in the South Los Angeles. In this district Afro-américains live mainly. In 1965 and more recently in 1992, the district was the theater of important racial riots.
Riots of 1965 and 1992
Following the arrest of 3 members of a black family because of a minibus to erratic control by the California Highway Patrol , of violent riots burst in this district the August 11th 1965 making 34 died, approximately: 1100 wounded, 4.000 arrests, 977 buildings destroyed or damaged and 35 million dollars of damage at the end of five days of violences. There were 43 other riots in the country throughout the year 1966.In 1991, police officers of LAPD pass to tobacco a young Afro-American of the name of Rodney King. The scene is filmed by an inhabitant of the district and will be diffused on the television channels of the whole world. After the payment in 1992 of the police officers authors of the facts, anger goes up of a notch and it follows from there riots of a rare violence, 38 people were killed and: 4000 stopped. The Korean community of the city was taken very hard with party by Afro-Americans. The governor of California had to deploy the national guard reinforced then by units of the federal army to restore the calm one.
Thereafter, the police officers will be rejugés and condemned to 30 months of prison.
The district today (years 1990-2000)
Today still the district of Watts remains one of poorest and dangerous of the United States where the gangs reign as Masters. But the future of this district is not completely gray. The inhabitants and the authorities count on the culture cause a drop in violence.After the riots of 1992, a man decided to create a workshop of dance in the district, Tommy the clown (Thomas Johnson of its true name). Nearly 15 years after, its activity became unexpected extensive, the dance of Tommy, the Krump , is now practiced by hundreds of people and starts to be exported in the whole world. A film, Rize , in addition left in 2004, recalling the history of this dance and the district of Watts.
With the beginning of the year 1990 was created the Watts Neighborhood Council (“the Council of the District of Watts”), an autonomous community agency. This council, which discusses the life of the district, functions thanks to public allocations
