Wassy is a common French, located in the department of the Haute-Marne and the area Champagne-Ardenne. Its inhabitants are Wasseyens… or familiarly " Flutots" …
Population (1999): 3 294 inhabitants (agglomeration 4 126).
The canton includes/understands 20 communes gathering 8 166 inhabitants.
Wassy is located on the Blaise, small river being thrown in the Marne. For memory, the Blaise takes his sources with Colombey-the-two-Churches (famous thanks to the de Gaulle General and with champagne of Colombey), passes upstream from Wassy to Cirey-on-Blaise (where Voltaire lived about fifteen years) and gives part of his water to the Lake of DER, Eclaron.
In 211, Wassy has been set fire to and plundered by the Roman Légions of Caracalla, Roman Emperor for this same year.
Marie Stuart, born on December 8th 1542, queen of Scotland then queen of France, marries François II, saw with the castle of Wassy of 1559 with 1561. François II fact gift in Marie Stuart, to enjoy it all its life, of the incomes of the grounds of Wassy, Chaumont and Saint-Dizier.
The massacre of Wassy takes place on March 1st 1562. The duke François de Guise of passage to Wassy, hears a Protestant ceremony: approximately 500 Protestants attended the worship in a barn of the city. This kind of ceremony is prohibited downtown, the duke is lord of the place and chief of the catholic party. Its men force the Protestants to leave. Twenty-three are killed, hundred wounded. According to the duke of Own way, they would be the Protestants who would have started the hostilities. This event marks the beginning of the first war of religion between the Protestants and the catholics.
With the 19th century, Camille and Paul Claudel lived Wassy (their father was registrar of mortgages there). The first work of Camille Claudel, a head of Bismarck, was carried out in Wassy and is still visible in the town hall. Camille Saint-Saëns came there from many times in his/her grandmother (any small child, it complained near his/her grandmother because the kettle of this one “sang false”! …)
The first June 1892, the president of the Republic, Sadi Carnot, inaugurated the splendid station of Wassy and direct the Troyes-Nancy line, by Brienne, Wassy and Sorcy.
Wassy was the seat of a sub-prefecture, until the removal of the district in 1926. In 1940, the district was restored, but with a new chief town, Saint-Dizier, city which had become much larger than Wassy, which thus remained simple chief town of canton.
