Wasserkuppe
The Wasserkuppe is more the high summit of the Land of Hesse and culminates with 950 meters. It is located close to the town of Gersfeld in the mountainous solid mass Rhön. The river Fulda takes there its source with about thirty other brooks.
Etymology
In spite of the high content in water ( Wasser in German), the name does not have anything to see with but comes from average high-German wass who indicated a pasture. It thus means " alpage".
Activities
This " montagnette" is very famous in the world of the Gliding. It is there that the first school of flight in Planeur of the world was created. It is there also the museum German of the gliding, an aerodrome used by four associations glide, a training college.During the creation of the Wall of iron, a station Radar was installed there because, located at the limit of old GDR it was a privileged place of observation of the troops of the Warsaw Pact. During the Seventies - 80, there was to four radar tracking stations (the Wasserkuppe was in American zone). They were given to the German army in 1978. Because of end of the Cold war in 1998, the site lost its strategic importance and the empty radome (going back to 1994) is not used any more but as visual reference mark to the pilots.
In addition to the activities of winter sport, it is a great center of Parapente and Aéromodélisme. One of course finds also hotels with restaurants there.
Since March 2006, a relay station of television amateurs, DB0TAN (1280 MHz) and since April 2006 a relay radio operator amateur 70 cm, DB0WAS (438,950 MHz).
Geology
The solid mass is characterized by the vertical traces of volcanicity. A geological teaching path joined the close top called Pferdskopf.
History
Students of Darmstadt made there in 1910 tests in vol. the sailplanes then were tractor drawn using rubber bands in direction of the Vent going up the slope.In 1922, Arthur Martens remained in the air during a whole hour. The same year, it founded the school of flight-with-veil „Martens “. Starting from the end of the year 1920, one used the ascending current .
In 1923, a monument (a bronze eagle on a volcanic cone in Basalt) was set up with the memory of the pilots died during the First World War.
A military academy of piloting and the majority of the buildings were set up for the period national-Socialist.
