Wasquehal

Wasquehal is a common French, located in the department of the Northern (59) and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Its inhabitants is called Wasquehaliens.

Geography

Located in the north of France, with less than 290 km of five European capitals, Wasquehal is very easily accessible thanks to its network from infrastructures of communication, true highway crossroads of the metropolis inhabitant of Lille, in the middle of the triangle Lille - Roubaix - Tourcoing. The Mark channeled, and the channel of Roubaix cross the commune; they will be reopened with tourist navigation in 2008 (program Blue Links).

History

  • the mention, in 1096, of the knight Gerard de Waskenhal attests for the first time of the existence of a small stronghold of sixty fires. The Germanic etymology could be connected to the marshes of the place.
  • the death of Gerard de Ghistelles, killed with the Battle of Azincourt in 1415, caused the division of the field in Wasquehal it Marque and Wasquehal-Parish. The meeting of these two strongholds goes back only to 1782, when Charles Joseph Lespagnol de Grimbry assumed the title of lord of Wasquehal after being itself become purchaser of the two seigniories. The French revolution did not delay.
  • the arrival of the Socialists to the town hall involved, in 1901, the departure of the sisters franciscaines of Calais who held the private school.
