Al-Wasît is the name of an archeological site of Iraq. It was named thus by its founder because it is with semi way of Bassora and Baghdad on left bank of the Tigre. The Al-Wâsit site belongs to the cultural sites on standby to be registered in the Liste of the world heritage by UNESCO.

The town of Wâsit was founded Al-Hajjaj Ben Yusef in 702 to be its residence enabling him to control the border with the Perse.

Description

Wâsit is an Islamic site built at the beginning of the 8th century. It was intended to be an administrative center for Iraq. The circumference of the old city is of 16  km. It was abandoned at the 17th century after a change in the layout of the bed of the Tigre.

Most of the buildings of Wâsit are out of bricks. Excavations one carried out between 196 and 1942 and only taken again in 1985. Large the Mosquée shows the possibility for four successive layers of constructions of 14th at the 8th century. One found part of the palate of the emir against the mosque on the side of the Qibla. A building named the “Minaret” was released with a mausoleum and a school going back to before the 14th century

Work of safeguarding was made on the minaret, but it there charms have true maintenance of the site.
