History
The school was founded by Shigenobu Ōkuma, young man intended by his family to become Samurai, in 1882. She became university with whole share in 1902. The major part of the campus was destroyed during the bombardment of Tōkyō during the Second world war, but the university was rebuilt and reopened in 1949.The programme of literature of Waseda is particularly famous and counts Haruki Murakami and Tawara Machi among its former students. Joyu Fumihiro, the chief of the sect Alpeh (known in the past under the name of Aum Shinrikyo) is also resulting from Waseda, where he studied the artificial intelligence.
Waseda is also recognized like a training ground for the Japanese politicians. Five Prime Ministers world post-war are the old ones of Waseda. Among the last ten Prime Ministers, three result from Waseda, two of the Université Keiō, one of the Université of Tōkyō and zero of the Université of Kyōto. The socialist leader Suzuki Mosaburo was also old of Waseda.
A victim of the Attacks of September 11th, 2001 named Toshiya Kuge (page of the Memorial Wikipédia), which was one of the passengers of the Vol 93 of United Airlines, was student of this university.
Sōdai was recently implied in the development of the robot going WL-16.
Concerning the stereotypes on Waseda and Keiō, most frequently heard are that the pupils of Waseda, although overall easy financially, tend to be much more ribalds and ground-with-ground that those going in Keiō. The women going with Keiō are in particular often designated like ojō-sama , “ princesses ”.
