Wareham (Dorset)

Wareham is a city of the Dorset, England. It is to 13 km in the south-west of Poole. The population is of 8,417 inhabitants of the addition of the population of Wareham (5,665 hab) and the parish of Wareham-St-Martin (2,752 hab).

Geography

Wareham is located between the rivers Frome and Piddle and is in the south-west of the port of Poole.

History

In 1762 a fire destroyed two thirds of the city which were rebuilt according to the style Georgien (red bricks and " limestone of Purbeck"). The city is divided into four districts by the two main streets which cross with right angles.

In the Anglo-Saxon church St Martin, there is a Gisant with the effigy of T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) out of Arab dress.
