Warang

Warang is a village of the Senegal, located on the Small-Coast, to 88 km in the south of Dakar and near (ten km) to Mbour.

History

Two theses, also plausible, clash as for the origins of the village including/understanding two districts, Warang Socé and Warang Sérère and two chiefs of village.

According to the version Socé E, the word warang would mean " vaste" , the judgment carried by the first newcomers, come from Gambia.

According to the version Sérère, warang would actually consist of two words: war which means " tuer" and row which wants to say " embarquer".

Administration

The village belongs to the rural Community of Malicounda, in the south of the district of Sindia. It is thus in the Département of Me bour (area of Thiès).

The closest localities are Me bour, Sidibougou, Sintiou Mbadane, Gagnabougou and Nianing.

Population

Warang counts approximately 3.500 inhabitants, undoubtedly much more if one takes into account the holiday makers.

The majority are Sérères, Bambaras, Wolofs or Diolas. They are Musulman S to 97%. The village counts three mosques, soon four, but also a vault.

Economy

In complement of the traditional activities of the village - fishing, agriculture, breeding, but especially craft industry and trade -, tourism seems to offer new prospects, if one judges some for the example of the seaside resort of Saly. Hotels, campings and residences thus developed.
