War of the four lords
The war of the four lords or war of Metz is a conflict which devastated the area of Metz between 1324 and 1326.
Following quarrels with the town of Metz, and debts contracted near the middle-class men of the city, Jean Ier of Bohemia, his/her uncle Baudouin of Luxembourg archbishop of Truces, the count Edouard Ier de Bar and the duke Ferry IV of Lorraine form a coalition to seize the city.
The principal conflicts were due to the tangle of the grounds and the possessions, the Metz-native middle-class men not respecting always their obligations of vassal on some of them.
Among the debts one can quote:
- the payment of a ransom by the duke of Lorraine with Louis of Bavaria which had done it captive after the defeat of Mühldorf in 1322
- a loan of 50.000 books with Henri de Görtz father of Jean Ier of Bohemia to finance its election as emperor
- the hiring of the troops of the city by Edouard Ier de Bar in a conflict against the bishop of Verdun.
After two years of disorders, the pope Jean XXII refusing his financial assistance, the four princes leagued was constrained to conclude peace with the Residents of Metz.
This treaty is also called “Peace of the Hareng S”. Indeed this mets very snuffed at the time was been useful by the residents of Metz during the negotiations which took place with Pont-à-Mousson, whereas trade route was supposed being controlled by the unfavourable lords.
The Metz-native middle-class men committed themselves not more buying grounds on the strongholds of the princes without their assent.
It is during the head office of Metz of 1324 qu ' would have been used the first guns in occident. ----
