War austro-Prussian
The war austro-Prussian of 1866 was the culminating point of the power struggle between the Prussia and the Austria within the Germanic world. In German, it is sometimes called the German War ( of Deutscher Krieg ), the German fraternal War ( of Deutscher Bruderkrieg ), the war of Unification ( of Einigungskrieg ), the War germano-allemande ( of Deutsch-deutscher Krieg ) or war the Seven Week old ( of Siebenwöchiger Krieg ). It is related to the third war of Italian Independence.
The Austria of the Habsbourg was historically the dominant nation of the Ancient Empire, but the rising power of the Prussia encouraged the latter to take the ascending one, candidate to direct a Germany news, unified under its wing and excluding Austria, worsens catholic including/understanding a majority of not-Germanic people then. It was about the realization of the vision of a '' Kleindeutschland '' (small Germany) dominated by Prussia, in opposition to the idea of '' Grossdeutschland ''.
At the conclusion of this war, marked by their victory with Sadowa, the Prussians obtained to exclude Austria from the borders of the entity succeeding the Germanic Confédération, the Confédération of Germany of North, making sure of this fact the domination of this union, which precedes the future German Reich.
This war was prepared by the Guerre of the Duchies of 1864, whose stake was to show that Prussia was the champion of German nationalism and to involve Austria in a war against the Denmark to conquer the duchies of the Schleswig and the Holstein, mainly populated Germans. The common management of these duchies makes it possible Prussia to find a pretext driving with the war against Austria. Prussia is then strong support of the Rhenish middle-class and nationalists, as well as liberals, interested by a reorganization of the capacities. Austria has as for it the support of the Germanic Confédération in rupture. The majority of the German States - in particular the Kingdom of Bavaria, the Kingdom of Wurtemberg, the Grand Duchy of Bade, the Kingdom of Hanover, the Kingdom of Saxony and the Grand Duchy of Hesse - support Austria.
But Prussia has an army powerful, modernized, equipped well and, like the Austrian one, ground by the war of the Duchies. It puts in rout the allies of Austria at the Langensalza (June 27th and 28th 1866), then demolishes Austria with the Bataille of Sadowa the July 3rd 1866.
Prussia can then create the Confédération of Germany of North and to impose its king like chair permanent. Prudently it does not include the States of the South. The integration of the latter, which will achêvera the German Unité, will be reached after the Franco-German Guerre of 1870.
