Founded in 1885, the locality was called then Simcoe. To avoid any confusion with Strong Simcoe, it was renamed Wapato in 1903. The city was built-in on September 16th 1908.
Approximately 75 % of the population (probably 85 % by including the clandestine ones) is of Hispanic origin.
