Wantzenau

Wantzenau is a common French, located in the department of the the Low-Rhine and the area Alsace. Its inhabitants are named wantzenauvien () S (not to pronounce the " t").

Geography

Town of approximately 5  700 inhabitants located at about 10 km, the north of the town of Strasbourg. The landscape is typical Ried and very beautiful walks with foot, horse or in the bicycle are accessible along the Ill and of the the Rhine.

History

In 1939, the engagements too becoming threatening, the inhabitants of the villages being located near the German border have as an order to evacuate. This order concerns more than 170 villages of which Wantzenau.

Initially, after having gathered some businesses, Wantzenauviens are directed towards the commune of Marlenheim. The access is difficult there so much the roads are encumbered. But the situation remains very conflict. After a few days of waiting, a train of cattle leads Wantzenauviens towards “the interior” towards a destination which is completely unknown for them. On arrival of this “convoy”, they discover Saint-Yriex! Wantzenauviens are relieved to find the light following this long way piled up the ones on the others. However, a new difficulty: a problem of comprehension. At that time, Wantzenauviens speak the Alsatian one mainly, it is thus difficult for them to be rendered comprehensible, but the hospitality and the generosity of Arédiens quickly make disappear this difficulty. Wantzenauviens will remain in Saint-Yrieux during nearly one year. Thus, for this time, and to perpetuate the founded friendship, an exchange of inhabitants between the two communes has been carried out every two years.
