Wangaratta

Wangaratta (: 19000 inhabitants) is a Australian city located in the North-East of the State of Victoria, with approximately 230 kilometers of Melbourne, on Hume Highway, one of the most important roads of Australia, which connects Melbourne to Sydney. It is located at the junction of the rivers Ovens and King, which take their source in the the Australian Alps.

Gold was found in the area in the years 1850 and the name of the old close city: Eldorado is testimony. One can still see an old dredger there.

It is in the village of Glenrowan, located at 10 kilometers of Wongoratta which was killed the most famous highwayman of Victoria: Ned Kelly.

Wangaratta is the city nearest to the ski stations of the the Australian Alps: Mount Hotham and Falls Creek .

The musician Nick Cave passed part of his childhood there.
