Wanaro Godrella

Wanaro “Bill” Godrella is not a player of Tennis French. It was born the October 18th 1949 with Noumea. It is a New Caledonian of origin Kanak.

In 1968, it belongs to the very first professionals to being authorized to take part in a tournament of the Large slam, then Roland-Garros. It does not succeed in being qualified to take part in it into simple (it is beaten at the time of the eliminating heats by Jacques Thamin but it plays then in double with Jean-Baptiste Chanfreau and in mixed double with Anne-Marie Rouchon. Both duet are both eliminated with the second round. The following year, it fails once again to be qualified for International France while being beaten at the time of the eliminating heats by his friend Patrick Proisy, and must be still satisfied with the competition in double. He plays then with Georges Goven as double Sirs and with whom he goes to the 2nd turn. In double lady, always with Anne-Marie Rouchon, it does not pass the first turn. It takes part if not the same year in the Tournoi of Wimbledon, always in double with Goven, where it arrives at the second round.

In 1970, it finally succeeds in taking part into simple in a tournament of the Large Slam, in fact Roland-Garros, but it does not pass the first turn. In 1971, it arrives to the second round of Roland-Garros but is eliminated with the first turn of the Tournoi of Wimbledon and with the Masters of Monte Carlo.

For the season 1972, it arrives at the second round of all the tournaments of the Large Slam except for Roland-Garros where it still does not pass the first turn.

But its best year remains 1973: during this season, it rises with the quarterfinals of the Open of Australia after having beaten in turn three Australian, of which Phil Dent. And to Roland-Garros, it goes to the third turn into simple and until quarterfinal in mixed double with Nathalie Fuchs. These good performances are worth to him to enter SIGNAL 100 of classification ATP, with the 89e place, and is thus 7th French. In the same way, it is integrated in the team of France for the Coupe Davis initially in 1973 at the time of the quarterfinals against the Norway (gained by the France 5-0) where it plays the match in double with Jean-Baptiste Chanfreau then in 1974 at the time of the preliminary match to the quarterfinals against the Portugal (there too gained by the France 5-0) where it also plays in double but this time with Jean-François Caujolle.

In 1974, it arrives in eighth of finale into simple at the Open of Australia and in double at Roland-Garros with Jean-Paul Meyer, with the Masters of Monte Carlo with the Italian Adriano Panatta. And in mixed double, with Nathalie Fuchs, it arrives in semi-final of Roland-Garros.

Starting from 1975, its career slows down: it limits its participation in the Internationaux of France of Roland-Garros and in some minor tournament, and does not exceed by the second round (in 1976, it is beaten as of the first turn) into simple. In 1976, it withdraws international circuit and returns in New Caledonia where it always teaches tennis with young people with Tennis Club of the Coffyn Mount to Noumea
