Walther Wilhelm Georg Bothe (born on January 8th, 1891 with Oranienburg and dead on February 8th, 1957 with Heidelberg) was a physicist, mathematician and German chemist. It contributed fundamental shares to the modern nuclear physics. He was prize winner of the Nobel Prize of physics in 1954 with max Born for his work in statistical mechanics on the Méthode of coincidences.
Bothe is born with Oranienburg, of Friedrich Bothe, clock making Master, and Charlotte Bothe born Hartung, his wife, dressmaker. It passes its childhood and the major part of its youth in its birthplace. Born in the 2, Berliner Straße, he moves in 1892 to the 7, Bernauer Straße. The two houses were entirely destroyed during the bombardments of the second world war. He is characterized then by a sharpened and logical spirit, an inflexible will and a gift for the music and painting.
He passes his baccalaureat in 1908 to Berlin, then studies there physics, mathematics, chemistry and the music at the university until 1913. He finances his studies by private courses and occasional work to supplement his purses.
After having passed its Lehramtsprüfung (examination of teacher) in 1913, he works a time as assistant with the Landwirtschaftliche Hochschule (university of agriculture) of Berlin. But it is quickly engaged at the laboratory on the radioactivity of the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt, created one year earlier by Hans Geiger. Raise max Planck, it supports in 1914 its thesis of doctorate: About the molecular theory of the Refraction, reflection, Dispersion and extinction
During the First World War, Bothe is made prisoner of war by the Russians. During its captivity, it develops with makeshift solutions of the factories of matches and soda. It contributes moreover to several problems of mathematics and devotes to the training of the Russian .
