Walter max Ulyate Sisulu (May 18th 1912 - May 5th 2003) was militant ANC and a combatant anti Apartheid in South Africa.

Walter Sisulu was born in Engcobo in the Bantoustan from the Transkei (Is the Cape Province).

He is provided education for in a mission then starts to work in 1926 with old 14 years.

In 1928, it settles with Johannesburg as a domestic worker manual then and very quickly becomes aware of the social situation and policy of the blacks in the country.

In 1931, it turns over to Transkei and works as servant in an employer progressist of East London. It at the time tries to meet Walter Rubusana, one of the founders of the ANC, and develops its personal culture by reading a maximum of books.

In 1933, it turns over food to Doornfontein close to Johannesburg in his/her mother and works in ue bakery.

In 1934, the racial law obliges it to move in Orlando.

In 1936, it is implied in a strike then carries out various odd jobs before becoming in 1938 a sales representative of " Union Bank off South Africa". It makes at the time knowledge of Rusty Bernstein, a member of the party Communiste which allows him avoit access to the communist literature and to meet Govan Mbeki, a politicized student of Strong Hare.

In 1940, it joined the ANC and the September 11th 1944, with Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo, founds the league of youth of the ANC of which he becomes the treasurer.

Of 1949 with 1954, he is the general secretary of the ANC which he leaves a certain passivity vis-a-vis the imposition of the laws of apartheid by the government afrikaner of the national Parti. Thus in 1952, it leads the distrust campaign to the government and is first once stopped.

In 1953, it is in the name of the ANC that it will seek support in Europe, in the USSR and China.

In ten years, it is stopped and put in prison at seven recoveries (including five month in 1960) for its political activities against the South-African government and racial discrimination. He is condemned to six years of prison in 1961 but he appeals what avoids to him being imprisoned.

In 1963, it enters clandestinity whereas the ANC is prohibited. It is stopped with Rivonia the July 11th 1963 and is condemned to the life imprisonment in 1964 at the side of Nelson Mandela. It makes the major part of its sorrow on Robben Island, off the city of the Cape.

It is in October 1989, at the end of 26 years of prisons which it is slackening by decision of the government of Frederik de Klerk.

In July 1991, it is elected vice-president of the ANC, legalized again in South Africa. It will remain it until 1994.

Married to Albertina Sisulu the July 15th 1944, the couple had five legitimate children and four adoptive children.

Walter Sisulu died in May 2003. He appears into thirty third position of the 100 Greatest South Africans
