Sir Walter Raleigh (Beam 1554 - decapitated on October 29th 1618 with the Turn of London) was a writer, Poète, Courtisan, officer and Explorateur English.

It reconciled early the favor of the queen Elisabeth I {{Re}}, fought with courage the Irish revolted, conceived the project to colonize the North America, by melting in 1584 the establishment of the Virginia (of which the first chart was drawn up by the mathematician Thomas Harriot, who accompanied it), contributed to beat famous the Invincible Armada Spanish , and worked to replace on its throne the king of the Portugal (1589).

It was several times elected member of the Parliament and enjoys a great influence there. Disgraced one moment to have allured one of the girls of honor of the queen (1592), it returned soon in favor, and disputed with Leicester and the count d' Essex the heart of Elisabeth; one showed it to have hastened the loss of the unhappy Essex.

It had moreover to face the charge of atheism to the beginning of the year 1590, events which caused at the XXe century the assumption of a Secret society of atheists (the École of the Night) of which it would have been one of the members. Under Jacques I {{er}}, it lost all its credit, was shown to have taken share with a conspiracy against the king, and was thrown in a prison where there remained 12 years (1604 - 1616). According to Manley P. Hall, he was member of the Rosicrucian brotherhood.

Walter Raleigh obtained finally his bail, undertook in 1617 a forwarding in Guyana, where he hoped to discover gold mines, and took possession of part of this country in the name of England; but, having destroyed some Spanish establishments, he, with the request of Spain, was imprisoned again on his return; one revived the old charge of treason from which it had not been entirely discharged; he was condemned to death, and undergoes with courage a torment which he had not deserved (1618).

During its long detention, to sir Walter Raleigh had compound various writings, inter alia a Histoire of the World , which is extremely estimated for the style as for the bottom. He was the friend of Spenser. One allots to him the introduction of the Tabac in Virginia and to Jersey, as well as Potato in England. In addition to the History of the world, it left various Œuvres , which were published in London in 1751, and among which a Description of Guyana , illustrated by Hondius.
