Walter Hadye Lini was Pasteur Anglican and is regarded as the father of the independence of Vanuatu born in 1942.

At the time of the Anglo-French colonization of Vanuatu (known in the French-speaking world under the name of New Hebrides), Walter Lini founds in 1972 the Vanua' aku Pati, left Anglophone and Socialiste, in agreement with his socialist thought mélanésienne.

The November 14th 1979, Vanua' aku Suffered, suspected by some of electoral frauds, gains the legislative ones and Lini becomes chief of the government the 29. National independence is proclaimed the July 30th 1980 and Lini becomes the first Prime Minister of Vanuatu.

Throughout its mandate, Lini runs up against the old metropolises which see of an evil eye its bonds with the Libya and the communist bloc; its military actions in the area; its repression of the opposition; its independence activism (and in particular its logistical support for the freedom fighters Kanak S neighbors of the New Caledonia) and also its savage opposition to the French nuclear tests in the Pacific-South.

Its party tears in two factions in 1991, one led by Lini, the other by Sethy John Regenvanu and Vanua' aku Pati loses the legislative ones. Lini is replaced in December 1991 by Maxime Carlot at the post of Prime Minister.

Walter Lini died in 1999, his daughter Hilda Lini and his/her brother Ham Lini makes also party of the political personnel of Vanuatu.
