Initially stationed in Norway, it was then moved in Soviet Union where it was made prisoner of war. After its release, as from 1952, he worked as translator attached to the British authority of occupation. It is at this period that he discovered the American magazines of science fiction. In 1954, he worked with the editions Pabel Verlag, where he collaborated as editor and translator in a large collection of utopian accounts, especially written by Anglo-Saxon authors. In 1981, Ernsting left the Bavaria and the Austria for Ireland, but had to return to Austria close to his/her son, for health reasons.

Work

In 1955, Walter Ernsting published its first novel UFO amndt Nachthimmel ( an UFO in the sky of the night ) thanks to an easy way of edition. As the Pabel-Verlag editions refused to publish German authors in their collection of utopian accounts, Walter Ernsting presented his novel like the translation of a fictitious British author: Clark Darlton. Two years later, its novel accepted a literary prize.

Walter Ernsting published other novels under the pseudonym of Clark Darlton , of which Raum ohne Zeit ( Espace atemporel ) in 1957, and a trilogy entitled DER galaktische Krieg ( the galactic War ) appeared in 1958 and composed of Attentat auf Sol ( Attentat on the planet Sol ), Zurück aus der Ewigkeit ( Retour of eternity ) and Die Galaktische Föderation ( the galactic federation ). He was in addition one of the cofounders of the “German Club of science fiction” ( Science Fiction Club Deutschland ), of which he was the president during several years.

In 1961, it created in collaboration with Karl-Herbert Scheer the series of science fiction entitled Perry Rhodan. Scheer dealt with the narrative background, of the broad outlines of the action, while Ernsting chose the names of the characters. Ernsting wrote 192 numbers of Perry Rhodan, plus 26 pounds of pocket and 32 novels in the series Atlan. Gucky , the mouse-beaver, is an invention of Walter Ernsting and became one of the most famous characters of the series. Karl-Herbert Scheer (deceased in 1991) and Johnny Bruck (deceased in 1995), Walter Ernsting takes into account among the authors most faithful to Perry Rhodan.

Walter Ernsting officially withdrew himself from the series Perry Rhodan with the exit of the number 1622, but was always regarded as a full member of the team of authors of the series.

The work of Walter Ernsting includes/understands more than 300 novels and of the dozen news. Most of its work relates to the news of the series which he wrote under the name of Clark Darlton , but he also published under his true name.
