Walter Dirks

Prof Dr. h.c. Walter Dirks (born the January 8th 1901 in Hörde (Dortmund); died the May 30th 1991 with Wittnau close to Freiburg-in-Brisgau) was a Journaliste, writer and German leader-writer catholic.

Dirks was the secretary of Romano Guardini in Berlin and occupied a leading position within the movement Quickborn . From 1923 until its dissolution by the Nazis in 1934 he was writer with the newspaper " Rhein-Mainischen Volkszeitung" (catholic left). Dirks militated for the union between the Zentrumspartei and social democracy and rejected the Nazism without however being a resistant credit. With Theodor Steinbüchel, it was interested in the writings of youth of Karl Marx.

In 1934 Dirks was critical musical with the Frankfurter Zeitung . Although it did not express any political comment then, it was the object into 1943 of a professional prohibition and then worked for the editions Herder (Freiburg-in-Brisgau).

After the Second world war Dirks played an active role in the rebuilding of the civil society of Frankfurt and initiated there the constitution of the CDU. But its vision of an osmosis of the Christendom and Socialisme did not succeed in durably impregnating the party and it was withdrawn. With Eugen Kogon and Clemens Münster, it then published from 1946 the Cahiers of Frankfurt , which recommended the construction of a democracy on the basis of Christian socialism. From 1949, he was commentator of interior policy to the Südwestfunk and worked simultaneously (of 1953 to 1956) at the Research institute social of Fancfort. It published there with Theodor W. Adorno the " Sociological contributions of Francfort". From 1965 to 1967 it directed the cultural department of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk to Cologne.

Years 1950 at the years 1980, Dirks expressed the point of view of the critical minorities of German Catholicism. Many distinctions set it up with the row of " Spokesperson of the moral conscience of a communauté" (Gustav Heinemann).

Walter Dirks was married with Marianne Dirks born Ostertag (1913-1993).
