Walter Adolpho Ducke
Walter Adolpho (or Adolfo ) Ducke is a Botaniste and a Ethnologue Brésil IEN of Italian origin , born the October 19th 1876 with Trieste and dead the January 5th 1959 with Fortaleza.
Biography
It starts to work in the Amazon forest like Entomologiste for the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi but, under the influence of the botanists Jacques Huber (1867-1914) and Paul Cointe (1870-?), it is directed towards the study of the plants. It goes on many journeys in Amazonia where it studies the structure of the forest system. It makes appear 180 articles and monographs, mainly on the Légumineuse S.Ducke describes 900 new S and 50 new S. In 1918, while continuing its work for Museu Paraense, it collaborates with other institutions like the Botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro or the Instituto Agronômico C Norte. During first half of the 20th century, it becomes one of most important authorities on the Amazonian Flore.
In 1954, worrying about the future of the Amazon forest, it suggests with the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (National research institute of Amazonia, INPA) creating natural reserves. He does not see the result of his efforts because he dies a few years later. In 1963, Florestal Adolpho Ducke Held it is created and is dedicated to him. There is also a Botanical garden in the east of Manaus which bears its name.
