Walloon Independantism

The Walloon independantism is current Walloon Mouvement preaching the separation of the Wallonia of with the Belgium.

History

The independence current is one of young person within the Walloon movement. The first project of complete independence of Wallonia is born during the Second world war, within the democratic and socialist Rassemblement Walloon (RDSW), group primarily inhabitant of Li2ege, made up at the end of 1942 and gathering politicians and militant Walloon liberal and socialist. The purpose of the RDSW is then to create a sole party of left - without success - and to be an work group, in which the liberal Fernand Schreurs and the Socialist Fernand Dehousse take part, on the future status of Wallonia. The project of independence will be written in November 1943, after the departure of the federalists, in the form of a constitution project for a Walloon republic. Its principle rests on “the formation of a Walloon State independent, suitable for join a Flemish State and a State of Brussels, but integrated in the defensive system of France”.

The project of the RDSW will be presented during the Walloon National congress of 1945 but will receive during the “sentimental vote” only 154 votes on: 1048 voters, is 14,6%. With the Walloon National congress (1946) of Charleroi the resolution in favor of autonomy of Wallonia is worked over again. The discussions lead to a project of confederalism, implying the right to the secession of the States confederated with the help of several conditions. However, the project filed in by the Walloon members of Parliament in 1947 does not evoke any more this right to the secession which had been rejected by Walloon Rénovation

After this congress, this current remains discrete until in the Sixties. It is during the General strike of the winter 1960-1961 that the renardism appears, running independence for socialist and trade-union Wallonia, but its failure after this strike forces this trade-union company to be folded back on the constitution of a federalistic lobby, the Walloon Popular movement.

During the Seventies and the following decade, are born several parties like the Walloon Popular assembly and the Front for the Independence of Wallonia whose program is independence of Wallonia but after several electoral failures, especially that of the European elections of June 17th, 1984, this current falls down in the shade. It is the current rattachist who today gathers the Walloon militants dissatisfied with the result of the institutional reforms in favor of autonomy of Wallonia within the framework of the Walloon region. The choice of independence is supported only by one minority of inhabitants of the Walloon region today. A survey of the newspapers Towards the Future and Het Nieuwsblad of August 24th, 2007, indicates that 12% of the Walloons are in favor of the independence of Wallonia while 82,6% are opposite there.

Part of the Walloon Rassemblement enters in dissidence and form the Walloon Popular assembly under the presidency of Yves de Wasseige. Roger Thiry, also responsible for free Wallonia, is the general secretary. With the legislative elections of November 8th, 1981, the RPW forms trusts with the PS in the districts of Verviers, Liege and Nivelles and proposes a joint list with the Face for the Independence of Wallonia in the districts of Hainaut under the name of WALLOON.

In 1984, the party is dissolved when its founder president and Jose Happart join the PS. The party is refondé in 2006 by a former founder, Pierre Dutron.
