Waldemar Cierpinski

Waldemar Cierpinski , born the August 3rd 1950 with Neugattersleben (Saxony-Anhalt), is an East-German athlete , runner of marathon and Olympic double champion.

In the beginning, Waldemar Cierpinski was ran on 3.000 m steeple but decided to go up on the marathon in 1974. It was still almost unknown when it presented to the marathon Olympic Games of summer of 1976. It ran in the peleton of head until the American Frank Shorter escapes after kilometer 25. Cierpinski pursued it then taken the head for finally gaining the race with 51 seconds of advances over the American.

With the championships of Europe of 1974, it took the fourth place. Two years later, to the Olympic Games of summer of 1980 with Moscow, Cierpinski ran wisely, without trying to support the suicidal rate/rhythm imposed by the leaders. It caught up with them with kilometer 36 and carried out soon with a comfortable margin. Only Gerald Nijboer approached in the last kilometer but Cierpinski sprinta the last 200 meters for gains its second title on the marathon and to repeat the exploit previously carried out by the Ethiopia N Abebe Bikila.

Cierpinski still finished third of the marathon of the first championships of the world but the Boycott of the German Democratic republic with the Olympic Games of Los Angeles prevented it from trying to gain a third Olympic title.
