Waldeck Rochet is a French politician, born the April 5th 1905 with Holy-Cross (Saône-et-Loire), he is deceased with Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine) the February 15th 1983.

Biography

It is wire of sabot-maker. Its first name evokes Waldeck-Rousseau. After its military service, he follows the occupation of market-gardener. He adheres to Communist youths in 1923 and 1924 with the French Communist party. In 1931, it attends the school of the party with Moscow. He is secretary of the party with Lyon then goes up to Paris. He represents Colombes - Nanterre (the Seine) with the House of Commons of 1936 with 1940. He founds the newspaper the Earth .

Maurice Thorez charges it with the agricultural questions to the secretariat of the party. It supports the bringing together between Communists of the rural regions and urban. He refuses to condemn the pact germano-Soviet in 1939. After the dissolution of PCF, it is held in Algérie and is released by the Allies. It represents as of 1943 the Communist party in London and is member of the provisional Consultative Assembly in Algiers and Paris.

In 1945, it enters to the Political office and to be made elect appointed of Saône-et-Loire at the two constituent Assemblies then with the National Assembly of 1946 with 1958. With the advent of the V {{E}} Republic, it changes district and represents the the Seine then the Seine-Saint-Denis (Aubervilliers) until 1973. It chaired the Committee on Agriculture (1946-1947) and the communist group of the National Assembly (1946-1947 and 1962-1964).

It is number 3 of PCF after Maurice Thorez and Jacques Duclos. He is assistant general secretary of the party in 1961, then general secretary in 1964. Favorable to the union of the left, it gives to François Mitterrand the communist support in its presidential candidate in 1965. He endeavors to renovate and reorganize the party while observing a strict orthodoxy. He is confronted with the events of May 1968 and condemns the gauchists then he must face the Soviet intervention in Czechoslovakia which he disapproves. Moderate partisan of one destalinization “to Italian” of PCF, it is narrowly supervised by the orthodoxe wing of the Party and does not have a rélle room for maneuver. Its “neurovégétative disease” holds it far away from the political life. He dies the February 15th 1983.

In 2005, the hundredth birthday of its birth joins together more than 400 people with Branges (Bresse) of which many personalities of the Résistance, several former ministers, as well as the director of the communist daily newspaper Humanity .
