Wakayama

Wakayama (和歌山市 - shi) is the capital of the Préfecture of Wakayama in the area of the Kansai to the Japan. It occupies 4% of the surface and shelters 40% of the population of the prefecture. The city was founded on April 1st 1889.

The population passed from: 382155 in 2003 with: 386501 in 2004, is an increase of 1,87%. The density in 2003 was of: 1826.74 people by km ². The total surface area is of 209,20 km ².

This increase in population occurred in spite of the economic difficulties of the area, which suffered from the delocalization of steel the production center of Sumitomo Steel in China. The steel-works of Wakayama were reduced and restructured, then completely closed in 2004.

Wakayama is also known through Japan for its Umeboshi and its Mikan.

Wakayama is bordered in north by mountains and the Préfecture of Osaka, and is crossed by the Kinokawa river. In the center of the city is the Château of Wakayama, built on the mount Torafusu (the name means a tiger leaning on the side ). During the Period Edo, the daimyo Kishū of the Tokugawa clan reigned since the castle of Wakayama. Tokugawa Yoshimune, the 5th Daimyo Kishū Tokugawa, became the eighth shogun Tokugawa.

The city accommodated the team of France to the Championships of the world of athletics 2007 in August 2007 (hotel Hayashi Garden).
