Wagyl

According to the culture Noongar, the Wagyl (which one can also write Waugal or Waagal ) is a creature of the " Time of the dream " resembling a Snake. It is responsible for the creation of the Swan river, the river Canning, and other rivers of the neighborhoods of Perth, in the south-west of the Western Australia.

A higher being, the Rainbow snake, created the universe and the people. He delegated to Wagyl, a powerful divinity of a lower nature, the creation and the protection of the rivers, lakes, sources and Nature. The Noongar people were designated as the guards of the territories by Wagyl. Wagyl was visible the certain wise ones of tribes which spoke with the being about Time about the dream.

The escarpment of the Darling Range is supposed to represent the body of Wagyl which rests on the ground, with its curves and contours of hills and ravines, its rivers, its lakes (like the lake Monger) and its sources. As Wagyl slips on the ground, its way draws the sand dunes, its body digs the course of the rivers and the rivers. When it stops occasionally to rest, it creates bays and the lakes. Piles of rocks are judicious being its dejections and are regarded as crowned. While moving, these scales were detached and formed the forests and the wooded areas of the area.

It was suggested that the stories on Wagyl represented survival in the Oral tradition of the Australian Mégafaune, today extinct. There existed indeed a long python of 5-6 meters (the Wonambi naracoortensis) which was largely present in the states of the south of the Australia.
