History
The Wachovia Center was inaugurated the August 31st 1996 on the site of old the John F. Kennedy Stadium at a cost of construction of $206 million USD, mainly financed by private funds (the city and the state helped to pay the infrastructure). The building is in the south-east of South Philadelphia sports complex which includes the Lincoln Financial Field, the Citizens Bank Park, and the arena predecessor, the Wachovia Spectrum. The arena was inaugurated under the name of CoreStates Center , CoreStates Bank which agree to pay $40 million USD for the rights of name over 21 years with additional terms having to be solved later for a eight years additional period at the end of the contract. The rights of name were taken again by First Union Bank which repurchased CoreStates Bank in 1998 and First Union Bank amalgamated with the Wachovia bank in 2003. When the room named First Union Center, it was affectionately known under the name of the " F.U. Center" by the Philadelphian ones. The building was designed by the firm Ellerbe Becket. The room is occupied 230 days per annum on average. It has 7 restaurants of different kitchen and a brewery which manufactures beer on the spot.Because of the lockout of the Season LNH 2004-05, the unavailability of ice to the Wachovia Spectrum caused by other events with this place, made that the team affiliated of the Flyers, the Phantoms of Philadelphia (American Ligue of hockey), played their matches in Wachovia Center.
The building also established a record in February 2006 for the highest assistance at the time of a university match of Basket-ball in the state of Pennsylvania when the Villanova Wildcats beat the UConn Huskies.
The December 6th 2002, the rock group Guns Pink played a concert of the Chinese Democracy Tour.
The 2006, Comcast-Spectator announced that it would install a new central display board suspended to replace the original made by Daktronics. The new display board, is manufactured by ANC Sports, it will be similar to other display boards in the new arenas NBA such as the FedExForum. Other restorations for the tenth birthday of the arena includes an improvement of the continuations with more flat panel display HDTV.
