Waal

The Waal is a Rivière Dutchwoman which belongs to the Delta the Rhine. The principal arm of the the Rhine (to be precise, at this place, the Channel of Bijland) separates into two close to Pannerden. Waal forms the southernmost arm, which runs towards the west starting from Pannerden. The septentrional arm is formed by the Canal of Pannerden (followed the lower Rhine then Lek). Waal is most important of both for the River navigation.

Waal goes to the old confluence of Waal and of the Meuse (today, Afgedamde Maas), close to Woudrichem, it becomes the Merwede which runs towards the the North Sea by several routes; most of water runs via the Noord, the Nouvelle Meuse ( Nieuwe Maas ) and the Nieuwe Waterweg.

Nimègue is more the big city at the edge of Waal. Although the historical city is located on left bank, the commune has also extended on Right Bank for a few years (Lent, Oosterhout) within the framework from the northern extension from the city ( Waalsprong - Jump-of-Waal the ). Thus this commune is the only one to be located on two banks of the river.

Tiel (Right Bank) and Zaltbommel (left bank) is the two other big cities along Waal. As for the crossed natural areas, Waal separates the Betuwe (Right Bank) from the areas of the Rijk van Nijmegen, the Pays of the Meuse and Waal and the Bommelerwaard (left bank).

Waal is connected to the Rhine lower and Amsterdam by the Canal of Amsterdam than the Rhine (close to Tiel) and than the Meuse by the Canal of the Meuse than Waal (close to Nimègue) like by the Canal of Sint-Andries. With Sint-Andries, the Meuse and Waal are separate only of one distance of 1,9 kilometers.

Six bridges cross Waal, including two of Railroad: in Nimègue (2), close to Ewijk, with Beneden-Leeuwen and Zaltbommel (2). There is also some vat S.

Small Waal or Waaltje

The Waal or Waaltje is also the name of an old dead arm of Waal, in the south of Rotterdam.
