A W16 is spark-ignition an Engine made up of 16 cylinders laid out in “W”.
Geometry
All the W16 engines consist of four blocks of four cylinders each one (that is to say two blocks V8 superimposed), coupled to single a Vilebrequin. Two blocks VR8 form an angle of 90 degrees. In comparison, the engines W12 have an angle of 72 degrees between two blocks VR6.
Cars using a W16 engine
Bentley Hunaudières
The first W16 engine developed by Volkswagen, of a power of 630 horses, team the Bentley Hunaudières (Bentley belongs to the group Volkswagen since 1998).
Bugatti Veyron
Bugatti Veyron is equipped with W16 also developed by Volkswagen. It produces 1001 horses and a couple of 1260 NR m to 2200 rpm. So that it weighs less heavy, the driving block is manufactured out of alloy of aluminum and Carbone. The weight of the engine is of 400 kg. As comparison, the engine V10 of Porsche Carerra WP has a mass of 205 kg, while the engine V12 of the Ferrari Enzo weighs 225 kg.
The maximum mode is established with 6500 turns per minute.
The total power reached during combustion is of 3000 horses, for which it is advisable to withdraw 1000 horses consumed by the cooling system, and 1000 others in the line of exhaust.
The engine consumes on average 24 liters of fuel percent kilometers. This consumption can go up to 100 liters percent kilometers within the framework of a sporting control.
W16 Quadraturbo is also an engine very pollutant. It emits 574 G km -1 of CO2.
