Wéris

Wéris (in Walloon Werisse ) is a section of the Belgian city of Durbuy located in Walloon region in the Province of Luxembourg.

It was a common to whole share before the fusion of the communes of 1977.

Wéris is a commune of the province of Luxembourg only since 1839. It formed part before that of the department of Sambre-and-Meuse. It was created under the French mode by the meeting of the localities of Morville, Oppagne, Wenin and Wéris. From 1818 to 1823, the hamlet of Biron formed part of it.

The village is known to accommodate on the plate on which it is, between the valleys of the Ourthe and the Aisne, most important concentration of Mégalithe S (Dolmen S, Menhir S) of the country. These works are primarily made of Poudingue.

The village has moreover a splendid church of XIe century, a firm castle of the XVIIe century and several dwellings out of limestone, sandstone or half-timbering dating for the majority from the XIXe century. All these assets, the beauty of the site, the architectural unit of its houses as well as the care taken to their floral decoration largely contributed so that the village is registered since 1995 on the list of the 22 more beautiful villages of Belgium.

Wéris is a very alive and very tourist village. The Museum of the Megaliths proposes information on the site and the populations of the Neolithic . The Center of Exposure accommodates a new topic each year. One finds there also various publications and of the routes of walks. Several restaurants, in the center of the village, also propose to the walkers well provided charts, opened with all the wallets.

Etymology

The name of Wéris would find its origin in the old name Wedericia villa meaning the dwelling of Wederic .
