Music and Words

The differences between Vs. and Ten, the preceding album, are large. Vs. has a sound much heavier and less sophisticated than Ten. The songs of the Vs. album relate much to situations and problems of political and social natures. For example, " Daughter " speak about the aggressions made to the children, Glorified G treats firearms, " W.M.A" (White American Male) of racism and " Blood" choking world of the media.

Images and Design

The photograph found on the album is a Mouton on a farm with Hamilton in the state of the Montana. According to Jeff Ament, the sheep represents what was Pearl Jam before Vs., i.e. of the " slaves ".

Titrate album

The title as such comes from the album Vs. of Mission off Burma that Eddie Vedder affectionnait particularly. At the beginning, the album was to be entitled " Five Against One " as in the words of the song " Animal " , but the group finally chose Vs. to represent the various confrontations of which it is question in the various songs of the album. The idea of an album éponyme was also launched but it was thereafter isolated. It was however taken again later for the album Pearl Jam.

Alternate versions

Since change of the name " Five Against One" for " Vs." was done at the last minute, the first copies of the album have particular features. For example, the first cassettes still comprise the words " Five Against One". Others do not have a title of the whole. The discs vinyls do not have any title. Other differences related to the album are also known. Did everything so that several purchasers did not know the true title of the album.

General reception

During five weeks consecutive, Vs. dominated the prize list of Billboard 200. The album sold 950,378 copies in its first week, which establishes a new record of sales in a first week. The record was broken a few years later by the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, but at this time, the methods to count the sales were different because at the time of Vs., the sales of the first week amounted only for the first five days after the exit of an album whereas later, Soundscan chooses to count the septs first days. Until Soundscan changes its methods, the Vs. album kept the title of more than sales in five days.

The group had not only changed musicalement but also in a professional and social way. Pearl Jam did not produce clips vidéos after the phenomenal success of Jeremy and the interviews with the group as well as the televisual appearances were done much rarer.

Vs. nevertheless succeeded in producing many hits of which " Daughter ", " Dissenting " , " Go " and " Animal ". " Daughter " the #1 reached charters Billboard Modern Rock and Billboard Mainstream Rock and remained there during 8 weeks on the latter.
