Vrms

vrms means Virtual Richard Mr. Stallman is a Richard Stallman virtual . vrms is written in Perl and under is published under License LPG.

Principle

vrms is a software in line mode of orders written in an original manner for Debian GNU/Linux, but which also functions on the distributions based on Debian and using apt like Ubuntu. This program analyzes the list of the packages installed (available in /var/lib/dpkg/status) in the search of packages non-free . If it finds some, it will list them on the standard exit with a short explanation of the reason for which the software is regarded as nonfree . vrms lays out locally of a list of nonfree software and explanation associated in the file /usr/share/vrms/reasons/vrms .

If no package non-free is found on the system, vrms will post the sentence “ No non-free packages installed one $ {hostname}! rms would Be proud ” (“No nonfree packages installed on $hostname! rms would be proud”). Of course $hostname will be replaced by the name of the machine. If one or more packages are found, then vrms will post the number of found packages, the total number of packages, a nonfree percentage of packages compared to the total number of packages, then a list of the packages which pose problem.

Philosophy

As non-free the software is regarded impose restrictions on their use or their modification, which implies that they do not answer the criteria defined by the social contract of Debian and DFSG. Certain software is sufficiently important to be tolerated by the Debian users and thus is included in the distribution in spite of the problems of license.

The name of the package comes owing to the fact that Richard Stallman is famous for his engagement against the software owners. It in addition emitted the desire which the users should be able to know without difficulties if they use software non-free .
