Geography

This commune is located at 14 km of SEDAN, (3790 Vrignois). Its altitude borders the 160 m and its surface 804 ha.

History

Commune of relatively recent origin, which knew a rapid development at the beginning 19th thanks to industry (700 inhabitants in 1800).

Let us visit the village more closely: In the Main street, on the left while going towards the PASTEUR College, you can see a forging mill which was established on a traditional diagram, attested elsewhere as of XVIè S., the iron-foundry, built for Jean Nicolas GENDARME in 1822-23, innovates however on several points, and testifies to the experiments undertaken by this large Master of the forging mills with the assistance of his/her sons-in-law, in various places of the department since the imperial period. Three buildings are aligned under a large pond, split here to provide to each workshop a specific force: is this an application of the research undertaken in the field of hydraulics by the professors of the school of the Genius of Wall at the end of XVIIIè S.? The forging mill and the splitting mill-rolling mill were gathered in only body (on the left), in which fires and machines are distributed rationally: the essential component was the puddling furnace there running on coke instead of the traditional charcoal. There is an adaptation partial of the methods developed in England since 1709 and tested in Creusot in 1782-1787. Here, however, the blast furnace (in the center) still runs on the charcoal, stored in two large markets with coal (on the right), equipped with their pinions intermediate firebreaks. On the left, a barracks (1825) shelters several individual working residences equipped with a correct comfort. Additional workshops are distributed in the neighborhoods. With the difference of the majority of the buildings of forging mill which are close to the rural architecture, the three principal buildings have scheduled frontages, pilot of the ostentatious tastes of Jean Nicolas GENDARME whom one finds with VENDRESSE.

Time: 1st quarter 19th century

Construite in 1822-1823 by the ironmaster Jean-Nicolas Gendarme the factory aligns three bodies of buildings under its water reserves compartmentalized to meet the requirements in hydraulic force. One of the buildings joined together the forging mill and the rolling mill as well as a puddling furnace, running on coke. The blast furnace under its market worked to the charcoal; this fuel was stored in the two close markets. The working residences, whose employers' castle is contemporary, go back to 1825.
