Vrdnik
Vrdnik , in Serb Cyrillic Sr Врдник, is a locality of Serbia located in the autonomous province of Voïvodine. It belongs to the municipality of Irig in the district of Syrmie (Srem). In 2002, it counted: 3704 inhabitants, of which a majority of Serb.
Vrdnik, officially classified among the villages of Serbia, is a thermal spa located on the southernmost slopes of the Fruška Gora. In the vicinity is the Monastère of Vrdnik-Ravanica who was built at the 16th century.
Under the Roman Empire, a tower was built there by the emperor Probus. The Hungarian built there a fortress which is mentioned for the first time in 1315.
Starting from 1804, the city had its development with the exploitation of a layer of Lignite but the mine had to close in 1968.
The great Serb poetess Milica Stojadinović-Srpkinja (1830-1878) passed most of its life to Vrdnik.
