Vox populi

Vox populi is a Latin phrase. This expression means the voice of the people . One Vox populi finds it in the quotation , vox Dei , generally translated by the voice of the people is the voice of God , which stresses the importance of the opinion of the people in the democratic mode . This last proverb was diverted in the expression Vox populi, populus stupidus (see the Liste of false proverbs ).

It appears initially to indicate the mode of recognition of the Saint S in the Catholic church : it is the reputation of holiness in the Christian people which make the saint until the 13th century. Then, the Church subjects the case to a lawsuit in Canonization, in which the argument of the popularity of the saint is an essential condition: the spiritual radiation of the candidate is a sign of his participation in the holiness of God and brings the certainty which its example is accessible to the remainder from the Christian people. Within this framework, it means rather: if the people think that it is holy, it is that God must also think it .
