Voortrekkers is the term which indicates the populations Boer S which took part in the Grand Trek (Great Migration) between 1835 and 1852 in South Africa. The voortrekker term appeared in the years 1870 to indicate the communities Boer S which had left the Colonie of the Cape during the decades 1830 - 1840. The migration had finished with creations of the republics boers Transvaal in 1852 and free State of Orange in 1854.

The most important voortrekkers chiefs are Andries Pretorius, Louis Trichardt, Piet Retief, Hendrik Potgieter, Hans Van Rensburg, Gert Maritz and Sarel Cilliers.

Symbolism

The monument more symbolic system paying homage to Voortrekkers was inaugurated in 1949 on a hill (Hill Monument) overhanging the city afrikaner Pretoria, thus baptized in 1855 in the honor of Andries Pretorius.

The most distinctive flag of Voortrekkers is that used by the partisans of Hendrik Potgieter during the establishment of one of the 1st republics boers to Potchefstroom (Transvaal).
