Voorne-Putten
Voorne-Putten is an island Dutchwoman of the province of Holland-Southerner. She is delimited by the Haringvliet in the south, the Spui in the east, the Vieille Meuse and the Brielse Meer in north and the the North Sea in the west. She is located directly at the south of the industrialo-harbor complex of Rotterdam.
She is actually formed by two distinct islands in the beginning: Voorne in the west and Putten in the east. The two islands were connected by the stranding of the riviève Bernisse which separated them; Bernisse was dredged since. The Canal of Voorne, which separates the island in two equal parts, is thus not the border between the two old islands. Putten is thus much smaller than Voorne and is almost entirely occupied by the commune of Spijkenisse.
The island is divided into five communes, Spijkenisse, Hellevoetsluis, Brielle, Bernisse and Westvoorne and is populated by: 156000 inhabitants. (at January 1st, 2006). The old fortress of Brielle can be regarded as the semi-official capital of the island although Spijkenisse is populated. Brielle and the old military port of Hellevoetsluis are tourist and sporting centers snuffed. Economy of the island east primarily turned towards agriculture. The majority of its inhabitants work in Rotterdam or Europort.
The western end of the island is a natural reserve made up of dunes, located on the commune of Westvoorne. It is the first part of the island of Voorne has to be appeared. It formed in the beginning only one island with that of Goeree, from which it was separated by the Haringvliet. The two islands are connected again since 1970 by the creation of the Haringvlietdam.
The islands of Voorne and Putten were integrated into the Holland in 1371.
