Voodoo Soup
By publishing back-to-back Jimi Hendrix: Blues and Jimi Hendrix: Woodstock in 1994, Alan Douglas had returned in the good graces of more than one amateur of Jimi Hendrix. It is a little against any waiting that it published in 1995 the most disconcerting album of all its career of producer: whereas it had just republished remasterized versions of the three albums studio of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, it drew aside The Cry Of Coils and decided to substitute to him Voodoo Soup .
The title chosen by Douglas has its importance. On the one hand, he wanted to indicate that to publish First Rays Of The New Rising Sun such as Jimi Hendrix would have wished it raised of impossible because the album is forever unfinished. But in addition, he wanted to propose an album widening the base of The Cry Of Coils , too centered with his direction on the last trio of Hendrix. Each period post- Electric Ladyland was thus represented, except for Gypsy Sun & Rainbows. What Jimi Hendrix had not had time to finish was thus replaced by older sessions: thanks to the conceptual continuity of the work of Jimi Hendrix, the soup voodoo would thus not be indigestible.
Douglas estimated that certain titles were dated, or quite simply not enough good to appear in its collection. If the absence of My Friend could be justified, more than one amateur of the guitarist made a good with the ceiling by noting that Straight Ahead , Astro Man , Dolly Dagger , Earth Blues and Hey Baby (New Rising Sun) had been isolated selection. The more so as Douglas substituted to them titles of minor interest in comparison.

The new
One should not confuse The New Rising Sun with Hey Baby (New Rising Sun) : the two titles do not have anything to see. The piece which opens Voodoo Soup is instrumental recorded with the TTG Studios where Hendrix undoubtedly plays all the instruments. The version presented by Douglas is severely published (the title approaches in fact the nine minutes) and raises more outline than of the succeeded product. This sound voyage had however an interest of size: that to make pass to the till the amateur not wanting to pass beside a new of the guitarist…
With the discovery of the appropriations of Voodoo Soup , the teeth squeak a little more: Bruce Gary, the producer associated with Douglas, re-recorded itself the parts of battery of Stepping Stone and Room Full Of Mirrors .
These overdubs postmortem does not constitute the only element returning us to sadly celebrates Crash Landing : selection of the titles, as well as the notes of small pockets militate for a rehabilitation of this last. For as much, the version studio of Message To Love remains always also useless later 20 years. And if the nonfaded version of Peace In the Mississippi is higher than that published at one time, it does not remain less minor about it not compared with the isolated titles. It will be noted besides that the two titles resulting from the sessions of the Experiment with the TTG Studios are become again new.
On the remainder, there is not great a deal to add if it is not that the Mixage is not the same one as that of the versions available on the albums postmortem historical or on First Rays Of The New Rising Sun (where only the Mastering was remade). The guitar lead which ornaments the verses of Freedom has a different color, Drifting some features of guitar to additional backs at the beginning of title, Pali Gap lost its introduction and Angel is perhaps less rough.
A strange disc
He largely explains the decision of Experiment Hendrix LLC to substitute to him First Rays Of The New Rising Sun later two years. Disrespectful with many regards, but however far from being unpleasant to listen: the material used is admittedly most of the time exceptional. This ultimate disc of Alan Douglas is perhaps that which is more with the image of its producer.
