History

Created in 1936 by Jakob Vontobel under the name of Bank J. Vontobel & Co. with Zurich, the bank develops quickly under the successive direction of the son (Hans Vontobel), then of the grandson (Hans-Dieter Vontobel) of the founder.

In 1984, the bank opens its first branch with New York under the name of Vontobel the USA Inc , followed by Vontobel Asset Management AG follows in 1988, Vontobel Bank & Trust Company Ltd (Grand Cayman) and Vontobel Fonds Services AG in 1990 then Vontobel Fund Management SA (with the Luxembourg) in 1991. Will follow Vontobel Securities AG to Cologne in 1993, then various branches with Vaduz in 2000, Munich and Frankfort in 2002 and Milan in 2003.

In parallel, the bank also carries out some acquisitions, in particular the Genevese bank Tardy, of Watteville & Co SA in 1993 and Bankhaus Berger & comp. AG with Salzburg, in 1995.

Into 2000, the bank changes name to become Bank Vontobel AG and establishes a unit of name through the various subsidiary companies of the group (the banks Tardy, of Watteville & Co SA becomes thus Banque Vontobel Geneva SA , the Bankhaus Berger becomes Bank Vontobel Österreich AG. and Vontobel the USA Inc become Vontobel Asset Management, Inc ).

In 2004, the group Raiffeisen enters the capital of the bank to a total value of 12,5%. The remainder of the actions remains between the hands of the family and the Vontobel foundation.

In 2006 the Vontobel Group acquires Dutch company NIBCapital N.V. 56% of the share capitals of Harcourt Investment Consulting AG. November 1st, 2006, the group takes again the activities brokerage and corporate finance of the Genevese private banking Banque Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch.

In 2007 Vontobel opened in London a subsidiary company in charge of the operations of broking. Its services cover the totality of the services in this field, in particular an analysis independent of the Swiss actions of companies and european companies selected as well as recommendations of placement.
