Volunteers

in ''''' Volunteers ''''' is an album of the group of Rock psychedelic in [[Jefferson Airplane]] recorded in April 1969 left in November 1969. It was the subject of a controversy at its exit because of the pacifist message carried by these songs into full Guerre with Vietnam. A title initially under consideration for the album was in '' Volunteers off America '' (literally: “Voluntary of America”). This title was abandoned under the pressure of the production company of the disc RCA.

The Recording

This album, the sixth recorded by the group, is the first which they recorded in its totality with in [[San Francisco]], in the studio of in Wally Heider. This studio, equips in 16 tracks was then with the point of technology on the matter. The album one of the first is recorded on 16 tracks and the small pocket of the album shows on its face postpones a photograph of the Magnétophone M-1000 (in [[Ampex Corporation]]) used for the recording.

Among the musicians external with the group are in [[Gerry Garcia]] with in '' [[pedal steel guitar]] '', in [[Nicky Hopkins]] with the piano, musician of session recognized in particular for its work with in [[Rolling Stones]], in Joey Covington with the percussions, which was to become later member of the group, in [[David Crosby]] and in [[Stephen Stills]].

Topics approached

This album is regarded as a stereotype of the production of the movement Hippy of the time, by its songs against the war and pro Anarchie. The topics of nature, the life in communautée and the ecology are also the object of the songs in '' The Farm '' and '' Eskimo Blue Day ''. The title of the album initially envisaged, in '' Volunteers off America '', came in fact from a Truck-dustbin which awoke the singer in [[Marty Balin]]. In addition to the title, the controversy around this album was caused by the words like “in '' Up against the wall, motherfucker ''” (on the first song) and “in '' shit ''” (repeated on several occasions on the track in '' Eskimo Blue Day ''.

Musicallement, the album is characterized by the play of precise guitar of in [[Jorma Kaukonen]] (in particular on the solos of the songs in '' Hey Fredrick '', in '' Good Shepherd '' and '' Wooden Ships '' where the guitars are answered) and by the presence with the piano of in [[Nicky Hopkins]].

Continuations with this album

For two of the members groups, Marty Balin (founder of the group) and Spencer Dryden (percussionist of the group), this album was the last recorded with in [[Jefferson Airplane]]. It is thus the last recorded in the traditional configuration of the group. The LP according to left only two years later. in [[Casady Jack]] and in Jorma Kaukonen would spend thereafter more time developing their new group in [[Hot Tuna]] whereas in [[Paul Kantner]] and in [[Slick Grace]] had in 1971 a named girl Clouded some.

Although the album was published in 1969, the photography of the group on the small pocket goes back to 1967. It was taken whereas the group carried disguises for the turning of promotional film of their in [[Individual (music) individual]] in '' Martha ''.
