Variations and localities
History
The Village has an old past, as testify some several Gallo-Roman sites discovered on its Ban. The Village is mentioned for the first time at the 11th century in the form Wilmonstre , which will evolve/move in Wilmunster , of the Germanic name of man Willo and of the substantive Munster , the Monastère.During a few years, the Village has a Fabrique Alun, of blotches, Rouge of Prussia and vitriol of Salzburg, created in 1822 per Mr Bouvier of Molart, starting from local mines. As for its careers of Plaster, they are then most famous of the area for the construction of Plafond S.
The village was destroyed ä 95% at the time of the second world war, most of the population being taken refuge with Sigogne, village theMaritime ones with which today Volmunster is twin.
Worships
From the spiritual point of view, the Village is until the Révolution with the head of vast a Paroisse of the archpriest of Hornbach, with seven branches. It is then set up in chief town of archpriest in 1802 with Eschviller, Weiskirch, Nousseviller and Dollenbach like appendices. Since the beginning of the 13th century, the Abbey of Herbitzheim, in uneven Alsace, has the right of patronage of the Paroisse then, during its suppression in 1554, this one passes to the lord of Bitche. The parish church Saint-Pierre, rebuilt in 1816 then in 1854, is very damaged during the Second world war and entirely rebuilt 1957 with 1960 on Plan S of Roger Sarrailh, Architecte with Bitche.
Administration
From the administrative point of view, the Village is Chef-lieu of canton since 1790, with like transitory appendices the common of Eschviller and Weiskirch since 1813.
Demography
The Population remained relatively stable since the beginning of the 19th century, if one excludes a demographic fall the shortly after the Second world war, which destroyed the borough and any sound old inheritance. It passes from 903 inhabitants in 1801 to 1 235 in 1851 (with its appendices) and in account still 914 in 1900 and 813 with the Census of 1982.
Places and monuments
- the church Saint-Pierre, rebuilt after the war.
- the site of the mill of Eschviller and its exposures.
- a Relief carved, posed in the oratorical located at the locality Bildergarten (the enclosure with the Image S), street of Bitche, completion date of the 18th century or the beginning of the 19th century. Taking again the double topic of the Virgin of Pity and Virgin of the seven pains gathered in the same figure, as on the cross of Rimling ( Imwiese ) or of Rohrbach (street of the Release), it associates it with the representation of the five wounds Christ. A long inscription of poetic inspiration written in German testifies to the Foi Populaire in the Région. It invites to venerate the wounds of the Christ, to take part in the sufferings of the Blessed Virgin and in repentance.
