Volley ball handisport

The volley ball handisport is a Handisport derived from the Volley-ball which is practiced by motor disabilities. It includes/understands two disciplines: the sitted volley ball invented in 1956 and the volley ball practiced upright for example by players amputees.

Rules

Volley ball handisport follows the rules of the International federation of volley ball, adapted by the Worldwide organization of volley ball for handicapped people.

The goal of the play is that the balloon sent over the net touches the ground in the opposing side.

With volley ball sitting, the players sat i.e. their basin must always be in contact with the ground, except for a limited time when they catch up with the balloon.

Equipment and ground

The circumference of the balloon must be ranging between 65 and 67 centimetres and its weight between 260 and 280 grams. For sitted volley ball dimensions of the ground are smaller and the net less high than with traditional volley ball since the athletes play sitted. The playing field is a rectangle of 10 meters out of 6, and the net 1,15 m is high for the men and of 1,05 m for the women.

Classification of the handicaps

In volley ball sitting, the athletes men and women are not classified of categories. The condition of participation is to have a driving handicap in conformity with the standards minima on the handicaps with volley ball, such as cerebral paralysis, lesions of the spinal-cord, amputation or other.

In volley ball upright, the athletes are classified of categories according to their functional capacities. According to their capacity to carry out certain movements, they are placed in one of the three categories: With, B or C (has corresponds to the athletes having the most mobility). A team of volley ball upright must at least comprise a player of category C and to the maximum a player of category A.

Competition

Volley ball is an official sport paralympic since the paralympic Jeux of 1980.

Volley ball upright was a sport paralympic between the paralympic Jeux of Toronto in 1976 and the paralympic Jeux of Sydney in 2000.

International competitions of sitted volley ball are organized since 1993. There exist championships of the world of sitted volley ball and upright.
