Scirocco is a half-compartment of the " type; 2+2" (two places before more two places postpones) which was marketed by Volkswagen of 1974 to 1988 in France, and until 1992 in Germany.
There were two successive models of Scirocco. The Scirocco I produces as from April 1974, was replaced by the Scirocco II as from May 1981.
Scirocco I was a half-compartment worked out starting from the base of the Golf " 1" , it had all the mechanical characteristics, but with a different body, which gave him a more sporting low line. Following the example Golf, it is the Italian designer Giugiaro which had drawn of it the line, which had an obvious success. Paradoxically, the Scirocco half-compartment left six months before the " Golf". It is thus officially the third model with traction before range VW after K70 and Passat. During all the duration of its production the Scirocco half-compartment was built in the factories of the Karmann carriage-builder in Osnabrück.
He was proposed in four motorizations: initially in 1.100 cm ³ of 50 ch DIN, (engine whose cubic capacity was increased then to 1.300 cm ³) and 1500 cm ³ (85 ch) with Carburateur and, as from 1976 accepted the engines 1.600 cm ³ Carburateur of 85 ch or injection of 110 ch de la celebrates Golf GTI. This model was then called " GLI" for the vehicles imported into France. The car, a little lighter and better shaped than his/her sister truck had outstanding performances for the time. Transistoré lighting was assembled as from 1980.
First Scirocco I had rectangular optics of headlights (Scirocco L driving 1.1 L) or of a grill with four round headlights (Scirocco TS) as well as two windshield wipers with the front one. The grill with four headlights (on the models in completion TS then WP and GLI) was quickly generalized, as well as the use of a single essuie-pane on all the models (1976). The bumpers evolved/moved at the same time of a metal profile to a block out of resin with a heart out of steel and the front indicators, in the points of wings, were also improved. The safety belts with the back were assembled to France by the dealers VW as from 1978 (they were not obligatory, at the time, in Germany). The total production of Scirocco 1 is of 504.153 units.
Presented to the living room of Geneva in March 1981 and marketed as from May, the second model of Scirocco appeared before Golf 2. Consequently, the travelling trains and the frame remained identical to those of the first Golf. Scirocco evolved/moved inside and outside, with rounder lines, sails about it at this time. More powerful motorizations were used, crowned by one 1.800 cm ³ injection with 16 valves of 139 ch. La body remained however a half-compartment 3 doors with 4 places. The total production of Scirocco 2 is of 291.497 units.
It is thus nearly 800.000 Scirocco 1 + 2 which was built over 18 years, which is remarkable for a car of this type.
In 1988, Volkswagen presented the half-compartment Corrado, based this time on the frame of the Golf " 2" (A2 Frame) and directed towards a top-of-the-range market.
The two Scirocco models and Corrado thus coexisted on certain markets, and until 1992 in Germany.
One can note that the name Scirocco will be taken again for the half-compartment derived from Golf VI, in 2008. Indeed, versions IV and V did not profit from this version, because the crenel corresponding was occupied by the small cousin Audi TT (from which esthetics was derived from concept-because Avus ).
