Volkswagen Schwimmwagen

Created by engineer Trippel, the VW 166 Schwimmwagen is a car Amphibie assembled on machine elements of the Volkswagen Coccinelle. Reducers of wheels increase the ground clearance and the couple of propulsion and a catch of force transmits the movement to the differential of before train, giving the capacity 4X4 in first and step back only. The differentials are of the car-blocking type with rollers.

This train of bearing and this transmission were also installed on the body of Kübelwagen and " Coccinelle" (Kommandeurwagen").

An end of hinged propeller, connected to the engine in low position, allows the propulsion in water moving before only.

It was particularly well adapted to the Russian face where the ways were too muddy to be accessible by other vehicles.

Production and use

Schwimmwagen was produced with approximately: 14625 specimens during the Second world war. The essence of these vehicles were useful on the Face of the East but some VW 166 knew Afrika Korps and Normandy
