Vogalonga
The Vogalonga is a regatta of rowing boats which takes place with Venice every year.
It is held at the time of the festival of the " Sensa" (the Rise) and is opened with all the oar boats: oar, kayak, canoe, gondoles, caorline, boats all models… the departure is given by a blow of gun Sunday to 9:00 in front of the ducal palate to the cry " Per Venezia E per San Marco! " ; the Venetian oarsmen raise their oars to greet. The course made 32km passing on the lagoon by the islands Burano and Murano, then return to Venice by Cannareggio and final descent of the Large Channel. The traffic of Vaporetti is suspended during the morning on all the course of the Regatta.
This festive demonstration is very popular at the Venetian ones and gathers oarsmen of all Europe: several thousands of boats are at the beginning each year. It is financed only by the organizers and the participants; there are no sponsors because it is a non-profit-making particular demonstration.
The first edition took place in 1975: the organizers wanted to protest against the multiplication of the motor boats in Venice.
