Vocabulary of the Golf
This article presents a list of the technical vocabulary used in Golf.
With
- Ace : hole in one that it is on one by 3,4 or 5.
- Adresse : position of the player before beginning his blow.
- Air shot : term indicating the fact of missing the ball. As the player intended to play the ball, it takes a blow of penalty.
- Albatross : hole played 3 blows in lower part of the by.
- Alignment : position of the player compared to the target which determines the direction of the blow.
- All public garden : says itself of a perfect equality between two players during a part in Match-play.
- To go : indicate the first nine holes of the course (holes 1 to 9).
- Approach : blow allowing to pose its ball on the green.
B
- Backspin : retro effect given to the Golf ball.
- Backswing : first part of the swing the purpose of which is to go up the arms with-dessu head by a rotation of the basin.
- Birdie : hole played in a blow under par.
- Bogey : hole played in a blow above par.
- Wood : club used for the long blows.
- Bunker : sandy obstacle placed on the fairway remotely of repercussion of drive either in front of or behind the green. The fact of falling into a bunker penalizes the player and obliges it to play a difficult blow.
C
- Caddy : nobody transporting the bag of a player. He is the only person being able to give councils to the player.
- Curry : distance covered by the flight of the ball before its repercussion.
- Chip : blow rolled in approach of green.
- Clubs : tool of the golfor allowing him to launch his ball.
- Cut : after the two first turns of a tournament in Stroke-play, a certain number of players will have the right to play the remainder of the tournament by being likely to gain the championship, by having a score with this number or in lower part. The cut is habituellemnt a number fixed players (for example 70), more all those arrived at this place. In certain tournaments, whoever being in lower part of a fixed number of blows (for example 10) of the leader are also included in the cut. Those which are not able to be qualified in the cut do not touch money for the participation in the tournament.
D
- Divot : tuft of grass torn off from the ground after an iron blow (also called escalope ).
- Dog-leg : form fairway in curve on the left or on the right which causes that the player cannot attack directly the green.
- Slept : says itself in Match-play when a player carries out of as many holes as it remains to play.
- Double-boggey : hole played in two blows above par.
- Down-swing : second part of the swing which consists in going down again the club to contact the ball.
- Draw : trajectory of ball which runs the right-hand side slightly to the left.
- Drive : blow of setting concerned at the beginning of a hole. Generally played with the driver (or wood 1).
- Dropper : fact constituting to give the ball concerned while dropping it to ground to end from arm and height from the shoulders.
E
- Eagle : hole played in two blows under par.
- fortuitous Water : free water not forming part of a water obstacle (rainwater puddle pool…). One can then dropper without blow of penalty.
- Label : together uses governing the respect of the other players on the course.
F
- Insipid : trajectory of ball which leaves the left slightly towards the line.
- Finish : third and last left the swing when the player finished his movement.
G
- Green-fairy : fixed price whose player must discharge to have access to the course.
H
- Hole in one : fact of returning the ball in only one blow in the hole.
I
- Index : level of the players amateurs (in the past handicap).
L
- Links : course of golf located in seaside.
O
- Only one : fact of returning the ball in only one blow in the hole.
P
- By : many standard blows fixed to finish a hole (or a course), determined by the length and the difficulty of the hole.
- Penalties : many blows determined by the rules of golf that the player must add to his score in the event of fault.
- Pluggée : says itself of a ball which is inserted in the ground (for example a ball inserted in the sand of a bunker).
- Practice : surface of drive made up of boxs closed or opened and fixed where one strikes balls without going to seek them.
- Putting-green : green of drive.
R
- Rough : part of the course of golf skirting the holes and placed on the sides of the fairway. The grass is very long there.
S
- Sweet spot : zone of optimal contact on the head of the club, more or less extended according to the tolerance of the club.
- Swing : movement carried out by the player with his club to strike the ball.
- Public garden : position of the head of the club which must be with the square compared to the objective to reach.
- Set-up : initial position of the player at the time of the addresses .
T
- Tolerance : says itself of a club of golf when this one is able to reproduce an optimal trajectory of the ball even if the swing were not perfect.
- Signal : says itself of a blow typed with the low part of the head of the club on the high part of the ball. In a trajectory results from very low and badly controlled ball.
- Hole-in-a : fact of returning its ball in only one blow (synonymous with Ace ).
