Voïvodie de Mazovie

The voïvodie of Mazovie (in Polish Mazowsze / Województwo Mazowieckie ) largest and are populated of the 16 administrative areas of the Poland (Voïvodie S). The chief town of the voïvodie is Warsaw.

The voïvodie was created on January 1st 1999 starting from old the voïvodies of Warsaw, Ciechanów, Radom, Ostrołęka, Siedlce, Płock and of part of old the voïvodie of Skierniewice, following a law of 1998 reorganizing the administrative cutting of the country. It is divided into 42 districts ( powiats ), including 5 cities having of the rights of district, and 325 communes. The name of the voïvodie refers to the historical area of Mazovie ( Mazowsze ).

The voïvodie has a Superficie of 35.598 km ² and counts 5.136.000 inhabitants (at December 31st, 2003).

The voïvodie of Mazovie is located at center-is of Poland.

History

The oldest traces of settlement in Mazovie date from the end of the age of the stone. Mazovie created for itself an identity with the Moyen-âge. The Mazoviens belonged to the group of the Slaves. It is one of the first areas to being built-in the country of the Polanes, controlled by the dynasty of the Piasts. The regional capital was at the origin with Płock, then with Czersk, finally with Warsaw (1413). After the transfer of the Polish capital of Cracow to Warsaw in 1596, Mazovie became the center of the political life in Poland.
